How Did COVID-19 Change the Education Game Forever?

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in schools closures across the globe as over 1.2 billion children are out of classrooms. Consequently, education has drastically changed with the significant rise of e-learning, by which teaching is practiced remotely on digital platforms. Surprisingly, research shows that online learning increases the retention of information as well as it consuming less time, which suggests that the changes in education caused by COVID-19 might be here to stay. 

Prior to the pandemic, there was a significant rise in the adoption of education technology, with the edtech investments in 2019 growing to USD$18.66 billion. In addition, the overall market for e-learning is expected to reach $350 billion by 2025. Covering virtual tutoring, Learning Management Systems, language apps and so forth. 

Now let’s delve deeper into how the education game was shifted. In February 2020, the biggest “online movement” in the history of education occurred after quarter of a billion students were instructed by the Chinese government to resume their studies through online platforms. And since the occurrence of that shift, across the world not just Wuhan, people started touting the advantages of online learning. It enables me to reach out to my students more efficiently and effectively through chat groups, video meetings, voting and also document sharing, especially during this pandemic. My students also find it is easier to communicate on Lark. I will stick to Lark even after coronavirus, I believe traditional offline learning and e-learning can go hand by hand.”

Despite the benefits and advantages that come with learning online, many challenges are surfacing on the other hand, thereby, people still ask if online learning is actually as effective. Well, for those who have good and stable access to the right technology, there is proof that online learning can be more effective and efficient than the traditional way of learning in many ways. 

There are multiple factors that the answer to this question depend on such as, the level of interactivity and engagement within the used LMS (Learning Management System), instructor-based videos, animation-based content and other forms of outside the class teaching.
